In the context of tooth replacement with implant-supported prostheses placed in the anterior zone, preservation and/or augmentation of peri-implant tissue volume is crucial to predictably achieving satisfactory aesthetic outcomes. Soft tissue, bone, or combined augmentation is generally indicated to manage alveolar ridge defects and improve the contour of the alveolus in edentulous segments. As important as having sufficient soft tissue volume is, proper management of the provisional and definitive restorations is also crucial to achieving optimal aesthetic results and healthy peri-implant tissues. This session will describe fundamental concepts for submarginal abutment design and the role of critical and subcritical contours in sculpting peri-implant soft tissues, including mucosal margin level, architecture, and colour. Special emphasis will be placed on digital protocols for efficiently transferring the provisional design to the final restoration. Finally, the impact of submarginal design on the preservation of healthy peri-implant tissues will be discussed.
Objectives
− Understand the concepts of the critical and subcritical contour and the role of provisional modifications in the final appearance of the peri-implant soft tissues.
− Present the current knowledge on the impact of submarginal emergence profiles in the development of peri-implant diseases
− Present a novel digital protocol to transfer the ideal provisional design to the final restoration

Óscar González Martín, DDS
Oscar Gonz.lez-Mart.n, DDS, PhD, MSc.
Dr. Gonzalez-Mart.n received a DDS degree from University of Seville in 1999. He was in private
practice in Seville and served as an assistant professor at the same university from 1999 to 2005. In
2005, he moved to Philadelphia to attend the prestigious Periodontics and Periodontal-Prosthesis
training program at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2009, he graduated from this program and
received the Arnold Weisgold Director ́s Award. He also became a Diplomate of the American
Board of Periodontics. In 2010, he received an ITI scholarship to join to the Fixed Prosthodontics
and Occlusion Department at the University of Geneva School of Dental Medicine. In 2015, he
earned an International PhD from the University of Seville. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief
for The International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry, serves as a visiting faculty at
Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Complutense University of Madrid, and is dedicated to
private practice at Atelier Dental Madrid.
